Join Amwins as an Underwriting Assistant supporting our Specialty & Captive division. This role provides foundational support through data analysis, proposal and renewal preparation, and coordination with internal and external partners. It is a hands-on opportunity to build the skills and knowledge needed to grow into a full Underwriter role over time. This is an in-office position that offers flexibility to work from home up to 2 days a week after the completion of training.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support: Assist the team with new business submissions, RFP responses, renewal materials, proposals, quote comparisons, and other underwriting deliverables for self-funded, stop-loss, and captive programs.
  • Review: Examine incoming prospect and renewal data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency; identify missing or questionable information and coordinate follow-up as directed.
  • Analyze: Assist with analysis of claims, enrollment, utilization, premium, and other healthcare data to support the assigned underwriter’s risk evaluation.
  • Prepare: Help develop pricing analysis, financial models, quote spreadsheets, and risk summaries under underwriter direction.
  • Develop: Build working familiarity with the factors that influence self-funded healthcare risk, including claims experience, plan design, demographics, funding arrangements, and captive structures.
  • Organize: Maintain accurate and organized account, submission, renewal, and historical data for underwriting reference.
  • Quality Control: Check data, calculations, reports, and proposal materials for accuracy and consistency, flagging discrepancies to the underwriter.
  • Communicate: Interact with brokers, third-party administrators, carriers, actuaries, and sales professionals to obtain information and clarify discrepancies, as directed by the underwriting team.
  • Track: Monitor outstanding submissions, quotes, and renewal requirements to help ensure deadlines and service standards are met.
  • Participate: Engage in training, team meetings, and workflow-improvement initiatives to build technical and business knowledge.

Qualifications include:

  • Education: A college degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Healthcare Administration, or other applicable field is strongly preferred; equivalent work experience also considered.
  • Experience: Prior Insurance and/or Underwriting experience is strongly preferred
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with self-funded health plans, stop-loss, level-funded plans, captive insurance, employee benefits, or healthcare finance is a plus.
  • Confidentiality: Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive account and health data.
  • Customer Service Focused: Must be customer service oriented and comfortable working with brokers and internal partners.
  • Tech Proficiency: Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Technology & Adaptability: Comfortable working in evolving, technology-driven environments, including the adoption of new tools, systems, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Prioritization: Proven ability to effectively manage time, prioritize workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Ability to work cooperatively with various staff members and to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with internal and external parties.
  • Attention to Detail: Sense of urgency and attention to detail are necessities.
