Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within a secure juvenile detention facility. This position supports daily operations by ensuring living areas, common spaces, staff offices, and specialized rooms meet cleanliness, sanitation, and security standards. The role requires reliability, discretion, adherence to safety protocols, and respect for the unique needs of a secure facility.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfaces throughout the facility.
- Maintain cleanliness in housing units, hallways, restrooms, intake areas, program rooms, and administrative offices.
- Follow established sanitation protocols to reduce health risks and support a clean and safe environment for staff and residents.
- Manage waste removal, including emptying trash, safely disposing of materials, and following any required procedures for biohazard or restricted waste.
- Refill supplies including soap, paper products, and cleaning materials in designated areas.
- Report maintenance concerns or safety hazards to supervisors promptly.
- Perform floor care duties including stripping, waxing, and buffing floors to maintain clean and safe surfaces.
- Inspect floor conditions regularly and determine appropriate maintenance procedures.
- Adhere to all security procedures, including proper handling and storage of keys, tools, equipment, and restricted cleaning chemicals.
- Work professionally around residents and staff, maintaining appropriate boundaries and contributing to a positive, respectful environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior custodial experience preferred, especially in institutional or secure environments.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safe handling procedures.
- Knowledge of universal precautions and procedures for managing biohazard materials.
- Ability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment including floor machines, buffers, extractors and other specialized tools.
- Ability to follow detailed safety and security protocols.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and time-management skills, including ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, controlled setting.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment or supplies as needed.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating with facility staff as needed.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and adaptable in a structured, sometimes high-stress environment.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

- This position operates inside a secure facility with controlled movement and supervision.
- Tasks require standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repetitive motion.
- Work may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, waste materials, and varying noise levels.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs occasionally.
