We are seeking an experienced Director, HNW Underwriting r to support the Bermuda High Net Worth (HNW) business. This role is responsible for executing end-to-end underwriting for complex, high-value life insurance cases, including medical, financial, and customer due diligence (CDD) assessments.The Director, HNW Underwriting will handle large and complex HNW/UHNW cases, support reinsurer engagement, and act as a key escalation and guidance point for junior underwriters. The role also supports claims adjudication and post-issuance underwriting activities, ensuring consistency with underwriting philosophy and risk appetite.
Key Responsibilities:
Underwriting Execution
- Manage and execute end-to-end underwriting assessments for Bermuda-based policies within assigned authority limits
- Underwrite complex HNW/UHNW cases, including multi-jurisdictional structures and large sum assured policies
- Conduct medical and financial underwriting, including assessment of source of wealth/funds, insurable interest, and complex ownership structures
- Assess medical evidence (APS, labs, specialist reports) and determine appropriate underwriting outcomes
- Define and manage evidence and requirements strategies for complex cases
- Ensure consistent, well-documented decisions aligned with underwriting guidelines and relevant regulations
Claims & Post-issuance Underwriting
- Support claims adjudication activities, including review of underwriting decisions at claim stage
- Assess post-issuance changes and ensure continued alignment with underwriting standards
Performance & Risk Management
- Identify and escalate potential underwriting risks, including anti-selection and fraud indicators
- Support portfolio performance monitoring by reviewing prepared portfolio reports (for key metrics e.g., loss ratio, expense ratio, etc.), extracting insights based on data and developing proposed remediating actions for CUO review
- Manage case pipeline to meet turnaround time (TAT) and service standards
Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with distribution teams, brokers, and case managers on complex case structuring
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally
Team Support & Mentorship
- Provide guidance and support to junior underwriters on complex case handling
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement of underwriting practices
Requirements & Qualifications:
- University graduate, preferably in Business, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or a related discipline
- 8 - 15 years of life underwriting experience, with at least 4 years of exposure to HNW / large case underwriting
- Professional qualification in Life Insurance e.g., FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute), Academy of Life Underwriting (ALU), etc.
- Solid experience in dealing with Reinsurers, Compliance, Legal and Distribution teams (e.g., Agency, Bancassurance and Brokerage)
- Proficient in English, both verbal and written
- Proficient in using Microsoft applications, e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word etc.
- Experience in multi-jurisdictional or offshore insurance environments preferred

- Ability to manage high-value cases under time pressure
- Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities
- Experience mentoring junior team members
