Who We Are:
We are one of the world’s leading economic consulting firms. We strive to recruit and develop talented people to work together to produce meaningful economic analysis of exceptional quality, and to create a positive impact on our clients and society.
Our Competition Practice provides expert economic advice on competition policy, economic and financial regulation, public policy and the assessment of damages in complex disputes.
We are looking to hire economists to help us to provide advice to our clients on some of the most high-profile cases before competition authorities, regulators and courts in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
We believe that working in diverse teams, where everybody's views are considered and respected, helps us to deliver work of the highest standards of quality and integrity.
Compass Lexecon is internationally recognized as a leading economic consulting firm with 22 offices around the world. Our Beijing/Shanghai office has an immediate opening for a full-time Economist position. While this position is based in Beijing/Shanghai, the Economist is also expected to collaborate frequently with Compass Lexecon's economists in the US and Europe.
Ideal candidates would hold a Ph.D. in economics from a leading university, ideally with a focus on industrial organization or applied econometrics, or a Master's/Bachelor's degree in economics plus three to five years of work experience in competition economics (either from an economic consultancy, a competition authority, or a regulator). We seek candidates who possess strong academic backgrounds. Demonstration of quantitative skills, writing ability, and qualitative research skills are required. Knowledge of Excel and statistical programming packages such as STATA, Python, SAS, or R are preferred. Candidates must be highly motivated, analytical, detail-oriented, able to work independently and in teams, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. Native in Mandarin and professional fluency in English are required. Candidates should also demonstrate sound judgement, good project and people management skills, and a dedication to high quality and accurate work.
The position demands a strong ability to perform empirical analysis, a deep understanding of economic theory, and a broad range of research skills. Economists are instrumental to our goal of helping clients understand how competition works in their industry. As an Economist, you will make a significant contribution to understanding the issues that face the client, relating those issues to relevant economic theory, and supporting the analysis with solid and persuasive empirical evidence. Economists are involved in nearly all aspects of project work, including interacting extensively with clients to gain insight into their industry, contributing to the development of theoretical and empirical approaches, utilising literature to support economic arguments, efficiently conducting empirical analysis using Excel and Stata, drafting reports summarising analysis, delivering an accurate and high-quality work product, and participating actively in client meetings and conference calls. They work closely with other analysts, directors, and firm principals, while also overseeing the day-to-day running of projects. As skills and competencies develop, there will be greater opportunity for independent work, extensive mentoring and supervising of junior staff, and playing a key leadership role in case strategy and client relationships.
A cover letter, resume, transcript, and a writing sample must be submitted to our online applicant tracking database in order to be considered for the position.
