We are looking for talented Principal Auditors to join our evolving Internal Audit team at an exciting time of development. In this role, you’ll deliver high-impact audit work across a diverse range of business areas, including model risk and credit risk, helping to ensure Nationwide continues to operate safely, sustainably, and in the best interests of our customers.
You will be responsible for executing audits end-to-end, applying a risk-based approach to identify key issues, provide meaningful insights, and offer constructive challenge where it matters most. By working closely with stakeholders, you will build trusted relationships and communicate your findings clearly, supporting better decision-making and driving real, lasting improvements.
This is a great opportunity to broaden your experience, deepen your influence, develop your skills and knowledge in areas such as model risk and credit risk, and play a visible role in strengthening governance, risk management, and control across a large, purpose-driven organisation.
We are a team that embraces innovation and continuously evolves the way we work, including increasing our use of data and analytics to generate deeper insights and deliver more impactful audits. At the same time, we are committed to developing our people, offering opportunities to stretch, build new skills, and gain exposure across a wide range of business areas, all within a culture that encourages learning and career progression.
As a Principal Auditor, your work will help ensure risks are well understood, decisions are well informed, and improvements are made where they matter most—contributing directly to the long-term strength of Nationwide and the value we deliver to our members.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.
The working hours (per week) for this role can be between 28 and 35 hours.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London or Glasgow office. If you’re based at our Glasgow office, this will apply from 1 April 2027 and ahead of that there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
You will plan and deliver audit assignments, ensuring work is completed to a high standard and in line with methodology. You’ll engage with stakeholders throughout the audit lifecycle, maintaining a no-surprises approach while identifying risks, testing controls, and producing clear, impactful outputs.
You’ll track and validate issues, support continuous improvement, and contribute to a collaborative and high-performing Internal Audit team.
About you
You will have:
- Proven experience in internal or external audit, or comparable risk management roles, ideally within financial services or relevant professional qualification e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIA, or CISA
- Experience working in model risk, credit risk or change management, or a strong interest in developing your skills and knowledge in these areas.
- Demonstrable experience of planning and delivering audit work, including testing controls and identifying risks
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate findings clearly and influence outcomes
- Ability to analyse complex information and use data insights to identify themes, trends, and issues
- Experience of producing high-quality audit documentation and reports to professional standards
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:
Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
