Senior Associate / Research Technologist - Power, Utilities, & Clean Energy
Jefferies (Jefferies) · Bank
- Investment Banking & M&A
- Houston, TX, United States
- Grade Associate
- Professional · Full time
Jefferies is seeking a talented individual to help build the next generation of Power & Utilities equity research. The role sits at the intersection of energy analytics, data science, AI, and fundamental investing.
The core objective is simple: use data and technology to rapidly distill complex information into differentiated investment insights and concise, actionable research.
The successful candidate will work with large and often fragmented datasets across power markets, utilities, clean energy, industrial supply chains, electrification, and energy infrastructure, building tools and analytical processes that allow our team to identify important developments faster and communicate what matters to investors.
We are looking for someone who combines technical horsepower with commercial judgment. The ideal candidate enjoys building tools, analyzing complex datasets, identifying patterns and inflection points, and ultimately answering the question: What matters, why does it matter, and what does it mean for companies and investors?
What You'll Do
Build Data & AI-Enabled Research Tools
- Build proprietary datasets, analytics, dashboards, AI workflows, and automation tools.
- Combine structured and unstructured information from market, regulatory, operational, industrial, geospatial, and alternative-data sources.
- Apply data science, machine learning, and AI to accelerate research and identify insights that are difficult to capture through traditional analysis.
- Automate the collection, organization, analysis, and synthesis of large volumes of information.
- Create tools that allow the team to move rapidly from raw information to concise conclusions and publishable research.
Develop Differentiated Energy Analytics
Analyze trends across the broader energy ecosystem, including:
- Power & Utilities: load growth, power prices, generation, capacity, transmission, rate-base investment and regulation.
- Data Centers & Electrification: AI-related power demand, large-load growth and the resulting generation and infrastructure requirements.
- Clean Energy & Technology: adoption, deployment, economics and supply chains across renewables, storage, nuclear, distributed generation and emerging energy technologies.
- Industrial Supply Chains: turbines, transformers, electrical equipment, generation equipment and other infrastructure needed to support power and electrification investment.
- Energy Infrastructure: natural gas and oil pipelines, storage, processing and other existing infrastructure, including utilization, flows, constraints and expansion requirements.
A major focus will be connecting these datasets. For example: How does electricity-demand growth translate into generation requirements, fuel demand, pipeline utilization, equipment orders, infrastructure investment and ultimately corporate earnings?
Turn Data Into Investment Conclusions
This is not a pure data-science role. The objective is to turn analytics into investment research.
- Rapidly analyze large datasets and identify the handful of conclusions that matter.
- Translate technical, regulatory, industrial and market information into clear investment implications.
- Build analytical frameworks that identify changes and inflection points before they become consensus.
- Develop concise reports, charts and dashboards that communicate complex conclusions simply.
- Support company research, thematic reports and client discussions with differentiated proprietary analytics.
- Present findings to institutional investors, sales and trading teams, company management teams and other industry participants.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for a builder and analytical problem solver with genuine interest in energy and investing.
Relevant backgrounds could include:
- Power or energy-market analytics
- Data science / quantitative analysis
- Utilities and energy research
- Clean-energy or industrial analytics
- Energy infrastructure / midstream analytics
- Equity research or investment management
- Energy consulting
- Software engineering or AI development
Desired Skills
- Strong proficiency with Python, SQL and modern data-analysis tools
- Experience working with large structured and unstructured datasets
- Ability to build analytical tools, databases, dashboards or automated workflows
- Familiarity with AI/LLMs, machine learning and emerging analytical technologies
- Experience with energy, industrial, commodity, infrastructure, geospatial or alternative datasets is highly desirable
- Strong interest in financial markets and investing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to reduce complex analysis to a few clear, defensible conclusions
We care less about checking every traditional credential than we do about intellectual horsepower, curiosity, technical capability, speed, judgment and demonstrated ability to build.
Why This Role Is Different
Energy markets are becoming both more complex and more data intensive. Electricity-demand growth, AI and data centers, clean-energy adoption, generation investment, electrification, industrial supply chains and existing energy infrastructure are increasingly interconnected.
The opportunity is to build a research capability that can ingest more information, analyze it faster, identify what matters, and communicate the conclusion more clearly.
The successful candidate will develop a distinctive combination of energy expertise, investment judgment, data science, AI fluency and research communication, while helping define how Power & Utilities equity research is conducted over the next decade.
