The Senior Software Development Lead provides hands-on technical leadership for the design, development, modernization and production stability of enterprise wire payment services. The role will mainly focus on the cloud-native applications while supporting integration with on-prem applications and upstream/downstream systems.

The successful candidate will combine strong AWS serverless engineering capability with application design, coding, troubleshooting and delivery leadership. This person will guide internal and vendor developers, review designs and code, drive resilient implementation patterns, and remain actively involved from requirements and estimation through production implementation and post-release verification.

Key Responsibilities

Provide hands-on technical leadership for the design, development and modernization of wire payment services. Translate business and regulatory requirements into scalable, secure and resilient cloud-native solutions. Design, develop and review AWS serverless applications using Node.js, Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, S3, APIs and AWS CDK. Lead solution design, code reviews, technical documentation, effort estimation and implementation planning. Establish engineering standards for resiliency, error handling, retry, recovery, observability, security and performance. Partner with QA on unit, integration, white-box, regression, performance, chaos and production-readiness testing. Diagnose complex production issues, lead root-cause analysis and ensure permanent corrective actions are implemented. Drive technology-currency, vulnerability and runtime remediation across application components and environments. Provide technical guidance to internal and vendor developers, ensuring quality, accountability and knowledge transfer. Promote automation and approved AI-assisted engineering practices to improve delivery speed, testing effectiveness and code quality.

Application development:

Node.js and Java is a bonus

REST APIs and backend service development

Microservices and event-driven design

Message-driven processing using Kafka, MQ or equivalent

CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment

Code review, troubleshooting and performance analysis

Production incident diagnosis and root-cause analysis

NFR, performance, chaos and fallback testing

Observability, logging, tracing, alerting and telemetry

Estimation, planning and dependency management

Technical documentation and architecture review

Preferred qualifications:

AWS Certified Developer Associate or AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.

Experience with wire payments, financial messaging or other high-value payment systems is a bonus

Knowledge of ISO 20022, SWIFT, Fedwire, Lynx or payment-message processing is a bonus

Experience applying AI-assisted development, test design, log analysis or code-quality tooling.

Salary:

$94,600.00 - $176,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
