Senior Manager, Data Controls Uplift & Governancenew
Commonwealth Bank (Commonwealth Bank) · Bank
- Sydney CBD Area, Australia
- Full time
- Shape data-control uplift across critical Economic Crime platforms
- Influence major change across technology, data, product and risk
- Provide trusted technical leadership from design to production
See Yourself in the Team
The Economic Crime Data Office provides the data leadership, governance and delivery capability that underpins CommBank's Economic Crime agenda. Partnering across a large and complex environment of crews, squads and stakeholder groups, the team ensures critical data is trusted, governed and fit for purpose, enabling the bank to meet regulatory obligations while strengthening the organisation's ability to detect, prevent and disrupt criminal activity.
With responsibility spanning hundreds of practitioners and numerous delivery teams, the Economic Crime Data Office operates at the intersection of data, risk, technology and transformation. The team shapes enterprise data strategy, influences major uplift initiatives, and provides the expertise, governance and assurance required to strengthen controls, improve data quality and build more resilient, intelligence-led capabilities across the organisation.
Your Impact & Contribution
As Senior Manager, Data Controls, you'll sit at the centre of this work, partnering with delivery teams to translate mandatory data-control requirements into practical, actionable expectations while maintaining clear accountability between control governance and delivery.
You'll act as the primary point of contact for delivery crews as they design, build and implement new or changed systems. You'll provide technical guidance on applicable data-control requirements, review Data Impact Assessments, challenge gaps, and ensure material control requirements are appropriately reflected within change governance and CMRS processes. You'll maintain a consolidated view of progress across multiple crews and squads, identifying where uplift activity may be off track and constructively challenging whether reported status is supported by observable evidence.
Importantly, this role provides governance, assurance and technical advisory leadership rather than direct delivery ownership. Your expertise will help teams understand what needs to be achieved from a strategic perspective, while delivery crews remain accountable for determining the technical solution, implementing controls and resolving identified gaps. You'll be successful when delivery teams have a clear and consistent point of contact, understand the data-control requirements that apply to their change, and can translate identified gaps into actionable uplift activity.
Your work will help ensure:
- Relevant changes complete Data Impact Assessments early in the lifecycle
- Material data-control requirements are identified before implementation
- Data Impact Assessment outcomes are consistently reflected in change governance
- Progress reporting is clear, consolidated and evidence-based
- Material gaps and risks are surfaced early and escalated appropriately
- Control weaknesses are identified and addressed before systems move into production
- Delivery accountability remains with the crews while governance remains appropriately independent
- There is a clear transition from build-stage control uplift into ongoing production assurance
Your Skills & Experience
We're looking for a senior leader who combines deep expertise in data controls and governance with the ability to influence complex enterprise-wide change.
You'll bring:
- Demonstrated leadership across data governance, data controls, technology risk, data management or change governance within complex and highly regulated environments
- Experience shaping control strategies and data-risk outcomes across large-scale technology, data or business-transformation initiatives
- Strong understanding of how data risk emerges across complex technology ecosystems and the ability to influence control uplift at scale
- Experience reviewing and providing oversight of risk assessments, control assessments, Data Impact Assessments or similar governance artefacts
- Ability to interpret policy, standards and risk frameworks and translate them into practical operating expectations for delivery and leadership teams
- Credibility to influence senior stakeholders and provide constructive challenge where delivery outcomes, controls or risk positions require greater scrutiny
- Strong strategic judgement, with the ability to identify systemic risks, material gaps, emerging dependencies and escalation pathways
- Ability to balance governance independence with commercial and delivery pragmatism, enabling teams to achieve sustainable outcomes while meeting control obligations
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to lead discussions, challenge decisions and present recommendations to senior leadership forums
- Proven ability to operate autonomously and effectively within a complex, fast-moving and highly visible enterprise environment
