Work at the heart of the Bank of England's international agenda
We are looking for a highly organised, proactive and relationship-focused individual to join the Executive Director's Office in International Directorate at the Bank of England. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of a fast-paced and high-profile area of the Bank, supporting senior leaders whose work shapes the UK's engagement with international economic and financial policy.
This is an exciting time to join International Directorate. The Governor currently chairs the Financial Stability Board and the UK will hold the G20 Presidency in 2027 and G7 Presidency in 2028. You will have a front-row seat to some of the most important international policy discussions taking place across central banking, financial stability and global economic affairs.
You do not necessarily need to come from a traditional Personal Assistant background. We welcome applications from individuals who have developed strong organisational, coordination and stakeholder management skills in a variety of settings and are looking to bring those skills into a senior leadership support role.
About International Directorate
International Directorate helps maintain the safe economic and financial openness of the UK economy. We monitor global economic and financial developments, support the Bank's policymaking responsibilities and lead much of the Bank's engagement with international organisations such as the G7, G20, IMF, FSB and BIS.
The Directorate offers a unique opportunity to work on issues that matter to the UK and global economy, while building networks across the Bank and beyond.
Why join us?
This role offers:
- Exposure to senior Bank leadership.
- The opportunity to build a strong network across the Bank.
- Insight into international economic and financial policy.
- A varied and fast-paced working environment.
- Excellent development opportunities and a potential route into a wide range of future careers at the Bank.
The role
Working closely with the Executive Director, Private Secretary and wider office team, you'll play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the Executive Director's Office.
You will:
- Manage a complex and fast-moving diary, helping ensure priorities are effectively balanced.
- Coordinate meetings, briefings, papers, travel and key engagements.
- Build strong relationships across the Bank and with external stakeholders.
- Support communication and information flow across the Directorate.
- Anticipate issues and help find practical solutions before they become problems.
- Handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgement.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to create an efficient, supportive and inclusive office environment.
Role requirements:
Minimum criteria
- Strong organisational, prioritisation and time management skills, with the ability to work in a structured way to a high standard under pressure.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, issues and stakeholders simultaneously, quickly and effectively.
- Ability to be part of, and work in, a strong team environment, displaying enthusiasm, reliability and flexibility, and being willing and able to take on new challenges.
- Experience of being a self-starter who can operate proactively with limited guidance, using their own initiative.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with a high degree of discretion, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Curiosity and a willingness to embrace new technologies and ways of working to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Some experience of managing or helping to set the workload of other staff.
Essential criteria
- Experience of managing or coordinating multiple, complex priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to build and sustain strong working relationships and networks, with excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to deal with senior internal and external stakeholders, delivering a high level of service.
- Track record of operating in a busy environment where organisational skills, planning and attention to detail were critical to success.
- Evidence of learning quickly, adapting to new situations and taking on unfamiliar challenges.
Desirable criteria
- Experience supporting senior leaders or leadership teams.
- Experience coordinating complex diaries, meetings, events or projects.
- Experience working in a large, complex organisation.
We recognise that successful candidates may come from a range of professional backgrounds. This role would suit someone who enjoys bringing order to complexity, building strong relationships and helping senior leaders operate at their best. Whether your experience comes from executive support, operations, project coordination, stakeholder engagement or another fast-paced environment, if you are highly organised, proactive and keen to develop your career at the Bank, we'd love to hear from you!
Our Approach to Inclusion
The Bank values diversity, equity and inclusion. We play a key role in maintaining monetary and financial stability, and to do that effectively, we believe we need a workforce that reflects the society we serve.
At the Bank of England, we want all colleagues to feel valued and respected, so we're working hard to build an inclusive culture which supports people from all backgrounds and communities to be at their best at work. We celebrate all forms of diversity, including (but not limited to) age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. We believe that it’s by drawing on different perspectives and experiences that we’ll continue to make the best decisions for the public.
We welcome applications from individuals who work flexibly, including job shares and part time working patterns. We've also partnered with external organisations to support us in making adjustments for candidates and employees in the recruitment process where they're needed.
From 1st October 2026, we expect all our colleagues to spend a minimum of 50% of their working time in the office per month. This is to capitalise on the benefits of working together in person across teams, while maintaining the flexibility offered by home working. Subject to that minimum requirement, individuals and managers should work together to find what works best for them and their team.
Finally, we're proud to be a member of the Disability Confident Scheme. If you wish to apply under this scheme, you should check the box in the ‘Candidate Personal Information’ under the ‘Disability Confident Scheme’ section of the application.
