Job Description

Lead, shape and direct the Investment Banking business for a medium franchise, assuming full accountability for delivering revenue and profitability, taking the nuanced country market maturity and risk profile into consideration. Identify opportunities to grow our client base across sectors and industries that will generate superior returns for clients, whilst driving growth and profitability for Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB).

  • Contribute to the setting, implementation, integration and monitoring of IB standards, policies, processes and guidelines and oversee adherence to guiding principles and governance aspects that uphold and maintain licenses and uphold Standard Bank Group (SBG) credibility and reputation.
  • Own, set and drive the IB country strategy, ensuring alignment with the overall Group IB strategic goals, objectives and priorities. Identify and drive new business development and build the IB business profile as the number one in the market, enhancing the overall SBG presence and competitive edge.
  • Ensure that the Country IB strategy is translated into annual operational business plans, collaborating with critical internal stakeholders, including client coverage, legal, finance and human resources to enable the effective delivery of the IB strategy, and that performance is continually monitored, measured and adjusted to align with the overall Country strategy.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the country socio-political, economic and regulatory landscape and utilise these insights to drive the creation of long-term value for IB, securing business growth and market leadership in accordance with the strategy. Lead decision making regarding which ideas to pitch and on which clients to focus.
  • Proactively develop relationships, networks and ecosystems with key external stakeholders including prospects, existing clients, regulatory bodies, industry specialists, investors and suppliers to garner collaboration and cooperation, maintain regulatory and legal compliance and minimise risk. 
  • Stay abreast of developments and trends in the market, industry, regulatory and client base by conducting research and developing and / or reviewing insights to support and drive existing deals, new opportunities and market developments that contribute towards enhanced brand reputation and market opportunities.
  • Identify and source IB opportunities with key industry clients across the country and develop / maintain sound relationships with the client C-suite to effectively market the Bank, drive recognition as a thought leader across core strategic sectors / markets.
  • Acquire new business and sell additional products or services to existing ones, ensuring effective cross-selling of products and services to maximise capital returns.
  • Lead the origination and execution of relevant IB deals and transactions, providing IB expertise to structure and tailor solutions to fit client requirements and context, ensuring completeness, compliance and quality while acting as primary point of contact for client and solutions escalations.
  • Guide and oversee the development and enhancement of IB Products and solutions, in collaboration with Product Heads, taking into considerations market trends and dynamics as well as client needs. 
  • Drive and implement the IB risk and reward framework and appetite, risk control procedures and governance to optimise full compliance with internal, external, regional and international regulatory control requirements. 
  • Own and set IB country targets and budgets. Monitor performance and undertake mitigating actions to ensure ROE target realisation. This includes the optimisation and alignment of the appropriate cost base.
  • Drive the desired high-performance culture and promote a compelling and meaningful shared purpose through the team to achieve defined targets and quality standards within prescribed SLAs. Ensure that what is determined at an IB level as priorities for leadership, diversity and inclusion, results in a superior employee experience and manifests in country.

Qualifications

  • First degree in Finance, Business, Banking, Law, or a related field; postgraduate qualification is an added advantage.
  • 10-12 years' experience in an international banking or financial services institution building exposure to financial analysis and due diligence methodologies, regulatory compliance, and financial product solutions.
  • Strong expertise in investment banking, structured finance or real estate finance with a focus on debt solutions
  • Proven ability to build and maintaining constructive relationships with clients and stakeholders, preferably corporate and institutional investors, lenders and real estate developers
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing diverse teams and driving product or business growth strategies.
