We're embarking on an engineering transformation with the key focus on quality engineering and automation.
You have knowledge that spans both development and operations, including coding, infrastructure management, system admin/engineering and DevOps Toolchains.
Together we will build tomorrow’s bank today, using world-leading engineering, technology, and innovation.
Do work that matters:
At the heart of the Digital & Assisted Lending Crew, this Principal Software Engineer role sits in the engine room of Business Banking Technology, shaping the backend platforms, service domains and digital foundations that power lending at scale. Reporting to the Crew Tech Lead, you'll provide strategic and technical leadership across platform architecture, APIs, integrations, workflow orchestration and distributed systems, ensuring critical lending capabilities are secure, resilient and built for growth. This is a role for an accomplished engineering leader who thrives on solving complex problems, influencing architecture and driving technology strategy across a large-scale ecosystem. While AI is becoming an important part of engineering, success in this role is grounded in exceptional software engineering expertise, with AI seen as an accelerator rather than a specialist focus.
This is a true full-stack, full-cycle engineering role where you build it, own it and continually improve it. While your primary focus will be backend platforms and service domains, you'll also tackle complex challenges across customer experiences, integrations and platform services, becoming a trusted technical authority across the Crew. Working closely with product, architecture and engineering leaders, you'll elevate engineering practices, develop talent and deliver solutions that create meaningful customer and business outcomes. Whether your background is in banking, fintech, telecommunications, logistics or another large-scale technology environment, this role offers the opportunity to shape the future of digital lending through technical excellence and influential leadership.
See yourself in our team:
Join the Digital & Assisted Lending Crew within Business Banking Technology, where we're reimagining how Australian businesses access lending. Our team sits at the heart of a major multi-year Business Lending Modernisation Program, delivering digital-first, AI-enabled lending experiences across NetBank, Mobile Banking and self-service channels. We solve complex engineering challenges to create faster, smarter and more personalised customer journeys, helping business customers access the funding they need with greater speed, transparency and confidence.
As part of this team, you'll help build scalable, cloud-native platforms that support millions of customer interactions every year. Working alongside talented engineers, architects, product specialists and business leaders, you'll shape the future of business lending through innovative technology, modern engineering practices and customer-centric design. The solutions we deliver have a direct impact on businesses across Australia, powering growth, supporting investment and helping communities thrive. This is an opportunity to work on meaningful technology at scale while contributing to one of the most significant digital transformations in Australian banking.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
Have deep experience designing, building, and operating large-scale backend platforms and distributed systems, with end-to-end ownership across architecture, delivery, reliability, and operational excellence.
Are recognised technical leaders in domain-driven design, service decomposition, and platform modernisation, with a proven track record transforming complex legacy environments into scalable, cloud-native service ecosystems.
Bring strong expertise across AWS, microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, Kafka, EventBridge, serverless technologies, and modern integration patterns that support high-volume, business-critical workloads.
Think platform-first, establishing engineering standards, architectural guardrails, reusable frameworks, developer tooling, and platform capabilities that accelerate delivery and create leverage across multiple engineering teams.
Champion engineering excellence through DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, SRE practices, resilience engineering, and secure-by-design principles.
Remain highly hands-on, contributing directly to solution design, coding, code reviews, technical decision-making, and the resolution of complex performance, scalability, and reliability challenges.
Demonstrate full-stack and full-cycle engineering capability, with a pragmatic understanding of how backend platforms, user experiences, data, infrastructure, and operational concerns come together to deliver customer value.
Have experience leveraging AI-powered engineering practices, automation, and developer productivity tooling to improve engineering effectiveness, software quality, and delivery outcomes at scale.
Influence engineering strategy beyond their immediate team, mentoring senior engineers and technical leaders while driving a strong culture of ownership, accountability, continuous improvement, and "you build it, you own it" engineering.
