The Subject Matter Expert in Payments Operations role exists to provide expert-level guidance, ensure operational accuracy, and drive process excellence across domestic and international payment workflows. It spans oversight of complex transactions, risk mitigation, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives within the Australian payments landscape.

What will your day look like?

 

As a Subject Matter Expert, you will be responsible for:

  • Acting as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Australian payment systems, providing expert guidance on domestic and international payment processes, including BECS, NPP, SWIFT, and MIP.
  • Supporting operations teams by resolving complex transactions, payment exceptions, escalations, and reconciliation issues.
  • Monitoring operational performance, identifying error trends, and conducting root cause analysis to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal control standards, including APRA and AML/CTF obligations.
  • Contributing to audit, risk management, and control testing activities to strengthen operational resilience and governance.
  • Developing, maintaining, and enhancing process documentation, SOPs, and training materials, while supporting capability development across the team.
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders and external partners to drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and strategic transformation projects.

What will you bring?

 

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:

  • 3-5 years of experience in payments, transaction processing, banking operations, fintech, or corporate treasury, with a strong understanding of both domestic and international payment platforms.
  • A solid understanding of Australian payment systems, including BECS, NPP, SWIFT, MIP, and RTGS, with expertise in end-to-end payment processing, reconciliation, and settlement cycles.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks, including APRA guidelines, AML/CTF obligations, and RBA standards, with experience supporting audits, risk reviews, and control testing activities.
  • Proven experience in reconciliation, exception management, escalations, and operational risk controls, complemented by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and training skills, with experience in developing SOPs, process documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (Master’s degree or MBA preferred), along with a collaborative mindset and a passion for continuous improvement, automation, and operational excellence.
